ESG Development in Construction 2023 update

This week, we come back to our ESG Development Heatmaps updates, focusing this time on the Mexican Construction sector. As we have always done, we focused only on (1) companies listed on the Mexican stock exchanges and (2) the materials publicly disclosed by those companies.

Construction Source: Publicly available company materials

What can we read from this heatmap?

  • Aleatica and Planigrupo are now aligned with TCFD’s framework.
  • GICSA and DINE sterngthened both their social and environmental information, and GMD features more environmental information in its public materials now.
  • PINFRA is yet to publish their 2023 integrated/ESG report.
  • Planigrupo externally verified its ESG information for the first time and adopted SASB standards.
  • Three companies (IDEAL, Javer, and Vesta) updated their materiality analysis this year.
  • ARA and CADU are now aligned with the UN’s SDGs.
  • GICSA, along with ARA, aligned their initiatives with the UN’s SDGs.
  • IDEAL, while not officially a signatory of the UN Global Compact, describes how its initiatives align with the Compact’s principles.

This year, the construction sector has shown good progress in enhancing the quality and transparency of its ESG disclosures. Companies are increasingly adopting sustainability frameworks and now, 100% of the companies in this sector include sustainability information on their websites. Having said that, there is still room for improvement as some companies are yet to fully implement sustainability practices.

This sector can play a crucial role in driving sustainability by addressing a wide range of opportunities. These include adopting eco-friendly building practices, minimizing waste, using energy-efficient materials, and enhancing biodiversity protection while safeguarding human rights. With such diverse areas for improvement, we are eager to see the progress these companies make in the coming year.

I hope you found this interesting. As usual, if there is anything we can help you with, or if there is an ESG topic you would like to know more about, please let us know.

Best,

Marimar

Saludos,

Marimar
