ESG for kids

Today we celebrate Teachers’ Day in Mexico. Inspired by their commitment to help our children learn and grow, we want to do something different with this week’s blog. Have you ever tried to explain sustainability concepts to a kid? By forcing yourself to simplify complex concepts and answering their wild questions, you can make sure you have a full understanding of the topic.

So, what would you say to your kid about the following 3 big sustainability concepts? Here are the answers we would use:

  1. Sustainability…
Imagine you have a big jar of your favorite candies. Sustainability is like making sure you don’t eat all the candies at once so you can enjoy them for a long time, and taking care of the candies that are still in the jar, so they don’t rot by providing the right conditions for them. In real life, sustainability means using our planet’s resources, like water, trees, and energy, carefully so there’s enough for everyone now and in the future. It’s also taking care of our planet, so it stays healthy and happy for a long time, just like you are taking care of your candies.
  2. Climate change…

Our planet gets heat from the sun every single day. When we do things like use cars, airplanes, or make electricity, we send gases called “greenhouse gases” into the air. These gases wrap around the Earth, trapping the heat from the sun, just like when you add an extra blanket to your bed, and you start to sweat. When there’s too much heat trapped, it makes our planet warmer, and that’s what we call climate change. Climate change can make the weather act a bit strange, like hotter springs or summers (like the last month in Mexico City), colder winters, or even big storms.

But don’t worry, there’s good news! Just like how we can take off some blankets from your bed to cool down, we can also do things to help slow down climate change. We can use less energy, plant more trees, and be smarter about what we do with waste. We can all work together to keep our planet cozy and comfortable for everyone!

  1. Diversity and inclusion…

Imagine you have a big box of crayons. Diversity is like having all the different colors in your box so you can make any picture you want to draw exciting! Just like how each color in our box is unique, people are too. We all come from different places, have different families, and like different things. And that’s what makes our world so interesting!

Inclusion is like making sure everyone gets to be able to draw, regardless of their color, where they’re from, or what they like to do. So, just like how we use all the colors in our crayon box to draw a beautiful picture, we include all kinds of people to make our world a wonderful place for everyone. Because when we celebrate our differences and make sure everyone feels welcome, people can feel safe and come up with ideas and new things that make the world even more amazing!

If you do talk about this with your kids, we would love to hear their questions and thoughts.

I hope you found this interesting. As usual, if there is anything we can help you with, or if there is an ESG topic you would like to know more about, please let us know.
