Estoy segura de\u00a0que a estas alturas has le\u00eddo o al menos has o\u00eddo hablar de la primera entrega del sexto\u00a0reporte<\/a>\u00a0de evaluaci\u00f3n del Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Clim\u00e1tico (IPCC), que se public\u00f3 esta semana (el resto se completar\u00e1 en 2022). Para quienes no est\u00e9n familiarizados con \u00e9l, el IPCC es el organismo de la ONU dedicado a evaluar la ciencia relacionada con el cambio clim\u00e1tico y cuenta con 195 pa\u00edses miembros. A trav\u00e9s del IPCC, algunos de los principales expertos en cambio clim\u00e1tico del mundo elaboran reportes exhaustivos que tratan de definir nuestro nivel de conocimiento sobre el cambio clim\u00e1tico, sus impactos y riesgos potenciales, todo ello basado en la investigaci\u00f3n existente (actuando como parte neutral en el debate). Los reportes de evaluaci\u00f3n se publican cada 6 o 7 a\u00f1os (el reporte anterior a este se public\u00f3 en 2014). Este nuevo reporte puede ser algo denso de leer, pero el mensaje es claro: nos queda muy poco tiempo para hacer los cambios necesarios.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u00bfCu\u00e1les\u00a0<\/strong>consideramos que\u00a0<\/strong>son los siete mensajes principales del reporte?<\/strong><\/p>

  1. El cambio clim\u00e1tico est\u00e1 ocurriendo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido de lo previsto<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cGlobal surface temperature will continue to increase until at least the mid-century under all emissions scenarios considered. Global warming of 1.5\u00b0C and 2\u00b0C will be exceeded during the 21st century unless deep reductions in CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions occur in the coming decades.\u201d<\/li>
  2. La influencia humana en el cambio clim\u00e1tico es indudable<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cEach of the last four decades has been successively warmer than any decade that preceded it since 1850. The likely range of total human-caused global surface temperature increase from 1850\u20131900 to 2010\u20132019 is 0.8\u00b0C to 1.3\u00b0C, with a best estimate of 1.07\u00b0C. It is very likely that well-mixed GHGs were the main driver of tropospheric warming since 1979.\u201d<\/li>
  3. El deterioro aumenta su velocidad a medida que aumenta la temperatura.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cMany changes in the climate system become larger in direct relation to increasing global warming. They include increases in the frequency and intensity of hot extremes, marine heatwaves, and heavy precipitation, agricultural and ecological droughts in some regions, and proportion of intense tropical cyclones, as well as reductions in Arctic Sea ice, snow cover and permafrost.\u201d<\/li>
  4. El ciclo global del agua seguir\u00e1 intensific\u00e1ndose.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cA warmer climate will intensify very wet and very dry weather and climate events and seasons, with implications for flooding or drought.\u201c<\/li>
  5. Los <\/strong>carbon sinks,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>o sumideros de carbono,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>se vuelven menos eficaces a medida que aumentan las emisiones (y por tanto se acelera el calentamiento).<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhile natural land and ocean carbon sinks are projected to take up, in absolute terms, a progressively larger amount of CO2 under higher compared to lower CO2 emissions scenarios, they become less effective, that is, the proportion of emissions taken up by land and ocean decrease with increasing cumulative CO2 emissions. This is projected to result in a higher proportion of emitted CO2 remaining in the atmosphere.\u201d<\/li>
  6. Mountain and polar glaciers are committed to continue melting for decades or centuries (very high confidence). Loss of permafrost carbon following permafrost thaw is irreversible at centennial timescales (high confidence). Continued ice loss over the 21st century is virtually certain for the Greenland Ice Sheet and likely for the Antarctic Ice Sheet. It is virtually certain that global mean sea level will continue to rise over the 21st century.\u201d<\/li>
  7. Pero a\u00fan podemos frenar esto si realmente nos comprometemos a disminuir las emisiones<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cScenarios with very low or low GHG emissions lead within years to discernible effects on greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations, and air quality, relative to high and very high GHG emissions scenarios.\u201d<\/li><\/ol>

    Esforzarse por mantenerse en el umbral de 1.5\u00b0C es importante porque si superamos este escenario, todo lo relacionado con el cambio clim\u00e1tico se volver\u00e1 exponencialmente extremo y pr\u00e1cticamente irreversible. Para lograrlo, es previsible que se produzcan cambios regulatorios y que haya varios impactos por la transici\u00f3n en las operaciones de todas las industrias. Si no lo logramos contener, se materializar\u00e1n impactos f\u00edsicos en activos f\u00edsicos y operaciones, as\u00ed como en las cadenas de suministro a nivel global.<\/p>
