The piece quotes anonymous sources who claim that US law enforcement agencies are “looking into accusations” of Andy’s ties to organised crime; since López Beltrán himself announced that his US visa had been revoked last month, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The report frames the former president’s son, someone “many see as the heir to the man who transformed the country”, as tainted by corruption allegations and as the embodiment of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s dilemma: caught between protecting the unity of her movement and meeting Washington’s growing demands that she crack down on corruption, including within her own party’s ranks.

AMLO himself resurfaced publicly this week for the first time since his letter to President Trump in June to promote his new book, Pueblo and to defend Morena, Sheinbaum and his record as president. Conspicuously absent from his lengthy video was any mention of his son.

A New York Times opinion piece by Mary Beth Sheridan, headlined “This is One Map Trump Can’t Redraw”, turned the spotlight on Ciudad Juárez, a city testing “the notion that the United States can unilaterally decouple from the rest of the world”. Juárez first boomed with US investment under NAFTA; now it is riding a Taiwanese wave driven by AI investment and infrastructure — an example of the often surprising “economic logic” of the borderlands amid the rise of artificial intelligence and the simultaneous American “assault” on free trade. Bloomberg columnist JP Spinetto also analysed this surge in Mexican exports (up 29 per cent annually in the first eight months of the year) and the accompanying decline in manufacturing employment. AI-driven exports require less labour and generate less domestic value; as one businessman he quoted put it, the trend means “Mexican companies would be better off investing in Vietnam or South Korea and exporting to the US from there instead of through their operations in Mexico”.

Bloomberg, meanwhile, reported on anxiety among US companies over the future of the USMCA, and on increased confidence among Mexican officials that a trade deal is in the offing. Ford chief executive Jim Farley put the odds of the three countries reaching an agreement at 50/50, but insisted: “This has to work. We have to find a solution for this, and I’m very optimistic that everyone knows how important this is”. In a Wall Street Journal column on this “dangerous moment for continental free trade”, Mary Anastasia O’Grady quoted a US steel industry representative who said he thought “Mexico is slowly giving in”.

Security and economics converged in another Wall Street Journal report on Mexico’s expansion of its anti-money-laundering laws under mounting pressure from the US Treasury. Bloomberg covered pressure of a more direct kind: the Treasury sanctioned 46 people (suspected traffickers and money launderers among them) tied to the Sinaloa Cartel, including a son of jailed drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.

The 12th anniversary of the Ayotzinapa atrocity prompted the government to yet again tout progress in the investigation and promise justice for the 43 missing students. As the Washington Post reported, the latest line of inquiry points to the involvement of the owner of two funeral homes in Iguala. Families of the accused have categorically denied the allegations, saying that since arrests were made in October 2025, “we have lived through hell”.

AP reported on INEGI census data published last week showing that more than half a million households nationwide had been displaced by violence over the past five years, the first time the Mexican government has released comprehensive data on what has been called an “invisible crisis”.

Blogs destacados en inglés sobre México

The Mexico Political Economist examined the new INEGI intercensal data showing a surprising slowdown in Mexico’s population growth and what the shift means for the Mexican state, and “whether Mexico is to grow rich before it grows old”. In Materia Gris, Eduardo García criticised Sheinbaum’s handling of a pro-government journalist at the mañaneras, arguing that the president endorsed the reporter’s inaccurate claims about Banxico pensions and even repeated one of them; he urges citizens and especially journalists to demand more, warning that lies risk becoming official discourse and a tool to concentrate power. Mexico Decoded analysed the “dark saga of Mexico City vs Airbnb” this week as the city appears poised to finally implement the regulation that went into effect in October 2024 to restrict short-term rentals, with the caveat “but in Mexico, one never really knows”.
